But it doesn’t say how far AI use in manuscript preparation may extend beyond basic grammar checks and proofreading. JAMA also permits, with disclosure, using AI for revising the manuscript, provided the original draft was written by the author(s). Neither policy gets into the specific levels of language editing permitted when using AI for revising content.

More recently, in September 2026, Springer Nature updated its policies with a more granular risk-assessment framework for AI use in manuscript writing. This framework permits AI use for basic low-risk assistance with clarity and structure, as well as for more extensive tasks such as outline generation and narrative framing, provided authors retain cautious oversight and disclose use. All three policies placed the responsibility for accuracy and integrity with the author.

What stands out to me in these updates is a defining shift, not only in how journals regulate AI use but in how researchers may approach writing a paper. Journals seem to have whole-heartedly accepted AI-assisted tasks as routine steps in manuscript preparation. They have moved beyond asking whether AI was used to write the paper; they now want to know how it was integrated into manuscript writing and how authors inspected its involvement.

Are Journal AI Policies on the Same Page?

Several journals emphasize AI-specific disclosure, transparency, and most importantly, author accountability. Yet, there is no well-established industry-wide AI policy. Although recent updates to AI policies seem to be shaped by a shared goal of maintaining research integrity, the guidelines differ widely, especially for AI use in manuscript preparation.

For example, you will find that some publishers, like JAMA, do not require a disclaimer for using AI to run basic grammar checks, but they do require specific disclosure when using AI to improve clarity and readability. Others, like Taylor & Francis, don’t require additional declarations even when using AI for copyediting and revising. Despite these differences, journals have tried to be as granular and thorough as possible to keep up with the pace of AI involvement in manuscript writing. But I wonder: Is a journal’s understanding of AI use for copyediting the same as the author’s?

In policy, journals clearly spell out for authors how AI can be used while writing a paper, what to declare about its use, and where in the manuscript to declare it. In practice, the line between what a journal considers permissible AI assistance with language editing and AI shaping the paper’s argument is blurred.

A single prompt to “improve the clarity” can result in AI running basic grammar and logic checks, along with extensive edits such as suggesting sentence restructuring, reorganizing the narrative, and substantially rewriting the argument, all within the same interaction. This blurred line is a glaring concern. “Edited for clarity and readability” can mean different things to different people. An experienced editor will tell you that clarity edits can alter meaning. The guidelines don’t specify what copyediting without altering content looks like, and current policies place the burden of drawing that line with the authors.

The Burden of AI Compliance

What’s striking to me is that while journals require authors to take full responsibility of both declaring AI use and reviewing output, AI companies simultaneously warn users that outputs may be erroneous, biased, or hallucinated and need constant inspection. So researchers are fully responsible for:

reviewing terms and conditions of AI tools,

documenting platforms and versions,

verifying AI outputs,

tracing the authenticity of citations and references,

assessing bias, and

maintaining a record of their supervision.

These additional tasks can make the writing process more labor-intensive for all researchers. But the burden falls the heaviest on doctoral scholars, postdocs, and early-career researchers, researchers with the least time, power, and room for error. They have to learn the research process as well as an evolving compliance system.

AI models, features, versions, and safety regulations change frequently, whereas journal policies tend to be updated periodically and are often broad. This means a researcher can incorporate the use of a version that did not exist when the journal policy was written.

OpenAI’s recent watermarking update illustrates AI companies’ priorities. They are keen to mark their involvement in generating text but do little to eliminate fabricated citations and hallucinations, clarify the boundaries between different levels of editing assistance, or prevent AI from influencing an author’s original thinking. Here, too, as with journal policies, the burden of ensuring research integrity and accountability falls back on researchers.

What AI Means for Academic Writing as a Skill

Does AI use in manuscript writing rob researchers of an integral learning experience?

The conventions of academic writing are well established, yet writing is a skill that researchers keep honing throughout their careers. So the question is: Does AI use in manuscript writing rob researchers of an integral learning experience?

Writing draws on critical thinking and logical reasoning. AI can be a useful writing assistant if its assistance is limited to mundane tasks, such as organizing lists and providing feedback. But if AI use for clarity edits, polishing, and sentence restructuring becomes routine, researchers may lose the hands-on practice of explaining concepts, outlining narratives, developing hypotheses, and building arguments. This gap can show up well beyond the paper, surfacing during presentations and conference talks, where researchers must explain and defend their ideas in real time.

As a reviewer, I can tell you that this gap is consequential not only for researchers whose first language is not English, but also anyone with weaker writing and comprehension skills. We can’t make the mistake of assuming that non-native English speakers use AI in the same way.

In the end, AI use policy updates may reinforce research integrity, but how will they safeguard the skill of writing and thinking like a researcher?

Is a journal’s understanding of AI use for copyediting the same as the author’s? Rapidly evolving AI guidelines In August 2026, The Lancet and JAMA updated their AI use guidelines.
