Recent findings point out that authors use AI tools to write scientific papers to a much larger extent than before, rising from 50 % in 2024 to almost 80 % in 2025 (1). The survey of researchers in Germany shows that more than 40 % of researchers are very familiar with AI tools, while almost 26 % of them are frequently using AI not only to improve language and style, but also to conduct literature searches, analyse data, write code, create graphics, and even identify research ideas (2).

Generative AI tools are here to stay, but there is still no consensus on what is ethically acceptable use of AI. The results of the survey of 5000 academics around the world show that most of them agree that the use of AI for brainstorming research ideas, writing code, analysing data, editing, or translating is acceptable, and that it is not acceptable to use generative AI for drafting a paper or generating images (3). However, what they disagree on is whether the use of AI should be disclosed and in what format: through a simple disclosure, or by giving details about the prompts given to an AI tool.

All major publishers and journals have developed AI policies, and they all agree that AI cannot be an author (because it cannot take responsibility for the submitted work) and that the use of AI (especially for the research) should be disclosed (4). This is aligned with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (5):

Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must be transparent in disclosing in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) of the paper how the AI tool was used and which tool was used.

Our journal Food Technology and Biotechnology has a similar set of recommendations, asking authors to declare the use of AI for research purposes (collection and/or analysis of data, or creating software code) in the Materials and Methods section (indicating tool, version, purpose, and prompts), and the use of linguistic tools for proofreading or style checking in the Acknowledgements (tool, version, purpose), of course, all with human oversight (6). AI cannot be an author or a cited source. The use of AI for creating or modifying graphical presentation of experimental data is not allowed. However, authors may use AI tools to create diagrams, schemes, and graphical abstracts, provided they check the output and give information about the tool and version. Our journal guidelines are aligned with COPE (5) and EASE (7) recommendations.

We guide the authors to check the accuracy of the output and to be aware of potential errors, hallucinations, and biases while using generative AI.

But how can we know that the authors have used AI during the preparation of their work? First of all, we rely on the authors to declare the use of AI in the EASE Interactive Checklist for Submitting Authors (8) that they need to upload along with the submitted manuscript. Also, authors should disclose the use of AI in the Materials and Methods and/or Acknowledgements section, according to the journal’s policy (6). We embrace the fact that more and more authors are using AI, but we insist on transparency, ethical use, and human oversight. We guide the authors to check the accuracy of the output and to be aware of potential errors, hallucinations, and biases while using generative AI.

Besides that, we are asking authors to indicate in our online submission system whether they have used AI for the preparation of their manuscript. This alerts editors to check if the authors have transparently disclosed the use of AI in the manuscript and guides them to be more diligent in their work and thoroughly check the content of the submitted work.

Many journals use AI checkers to screen the manuscripts. Similarly, our journal uses Turnitin v. 2.0 with an AI detection tool that shows whether AI was used to generate or rephrase the text. Turnitin report shows percentages of likely AI-generated or -paraphrased text. However, it can interpret text written by non-native English speakers as AI-generated, so these percentages should be taken cum grano salis; i.e. an editor’s decision should not be made based solely on the report. The editor should dive more deeply into the text, check its content and the accuracy of references, and look for “tortured phrases” and inconsistencies in style, phrasing, and formatting. If there is evidence of undeclared AI use, the report can be used as a basis for rejection.

We all need to be aware that we are accountable for our work. The authors are expected to take full responsibility for the content of their manuscript, even those parts prepared with the help of AI. We need to educate authors and editors on how to use generative AI efficiently, responsibly, and transparently. Only those who learn how to use AI will adapt to the new publishing landscape. But above all, we need to implement critical thinking. AI tools are just tools; they cannot and should not replace humans.

References

1. Glickman K.
