Langlands<\/a> has been awarded the 2018 Abel Prize for introducing a theory that would bring together diverse areas of mathematics. According to the Abel Prize committee, Langlands\u2019 theory revolutionized the field of mathematics as it \u201c<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abelprize.no\/nyheter\/vis.html?tid=73025\">suggested deep links between two areas, number theory and harmonic analysis, which had previously been considered as unrelated<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">The Abel Prize has recognized Langlands, now 81, for the conjectures he made in 1967 when he was 30 years old. He wrote a <a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/publications.ias.edu\/rpl\/paper\/43\">17-page letter<\/a> to the renowned French mathematician Andr\u00e9 Weil to share his insights. In it, he made several conjectures about\u00a0number theory\u00a0and\u00a0harmonic analysis. Langlands modestly wrote this in the covering note to the letter:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><i>\u201cIf you are willing to read it [the letter] as pure speculation I would appreciate that. If not \u2013 I am sure you have a waste basket handy.\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">The speculations Langlands made and the insights he revealed in the letter were groundbreaking; so much so that the letter became the beginning of a project that came to be known as\u00a0<i>Langlands program<\/i>. This program, which has also been described as \u201c<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/math-quartet-joins-forces-on-unified-theory-20151208\/\">a grand unified theory of mathematics<\/a>,\u201d has had several elite mathematicians working toward pursuing the ambitious project of bridging harmonic analysis with number theory.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Throughout his life Langlands has continued to pursue the program while also focusing his attention on some problems in theoretical physics.
