However, most of them require a firm grasp of grammar and range from the racy (<em>Eats, Shoots &amp; Leaves<\/em><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: 11.6667px;\">1<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0through the dry (<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Penguin Guide to Punctuation<sup>2<\/sup><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">) to the highly specialized (<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Best Punctuation, period<sup>3<\/sup><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">) [1\u20133]. I was therefore delighted to see<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.userdesignillustrationandtypesetting.com\/books\/punctuation\/index.html\">Punctuation . . ?<\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">, a book particularly suited to the readers of Editage Insights. In 36 short pages, the book gives straightforward advice on punctuation marks from the apostrophe to the semicolon, arranged alphabetically by the name of each mark and enlivened by cartoons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">That books show their authors\u2019 perspective is particularly true of books on punctuation.<em> Eats, Shoots &amp; Leaves<\/em> is racy because Lynne Truss is a broadcaster; the<em> Penguin Guide<\/em> is dry because Trask is an academic; and<em> The Best Punctuation<\/em> is specialized because June Casagrande is a professional copy editor. This explains why the book under review is particularly user-friendly\u2014Thomas Bohm specializes in user design and typesetting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Because a good grasp of grammar helps you in using punctuation marks effectively,<em> Punctuation . . ?<\/em> explains any grammatical terms it uses \u2013 \u2018a noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing\u2019 for example \u2013 and the text itself is simple, which is helpful to those for whom English is not the first language. Several examples are given for each mark, an approach that works better than detailed explanations. The book was in fact a runner-up in the \u2018Environmental\u2019 category in the British Book Design and Production Awards competition, 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">In short, if you wish to learn just enough about punctuation \u2013 in 3000 words and less than an hour \u2013 so that you can use punctuation marks correctly and effectively in everyday writing,<em> Punctuation . . ?<\/em> is the book for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">[1] Truss L. 2003.<em> Eats, Shoots &amp; Leaves: the zero tolerance approach to punctuation<\/em>.
