The winners of the award for this year were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laskerfoundation.org\/awards\/#name=&amp;award=&amp;year=2017\">recently announced<\/a> : \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/\"><strong>Planned Parenthood<\/strong><\/a> has been honored with the <strong>2017 Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award <\/strong>for \u201cproviding essential health services and reproductive care to millions of women for more than a century.\u201d The health care provider has been braving threats about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/13\/us\/politics\/planned-parenthood-trump.html?mcubz=0\">downsizing of its federal funding<\/a>, so the recognition this award brings might help Planned Parenthood make a case for itself.<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ccr.cancer.gov\/Laboratory-of-Cellular-Oncology\/douglas-r-lowy\"><strong>Douglas R. Lowy<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ccr.cancer.gov\/Laboratory-of-Cellular-Oncology\/john-t-schiller\"><strong>John T. Schiller<\/strong><\/a> have been honored with the <strong>2017 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award<\/strong> (both from the National Cancer Institute) for \u201ctechnological advances that enabled development of HPV vaccines for prevention of cervical cancer and other tumors caused by human papillomaviruses.\u201d The pair has worked together for several years to develop human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/ncis-douglas-r-lowy-john-t-schiller-receive-2017-lasker-award\">According to NIH<\/a>, \u201cThis award reinforces the critical importance of basic research in the development of medical breakthroughs like the HPV vaccine.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biozentrum.unibas.ch\/research\/groups-platforms\/overview\/unit\/hall\/\"><strong>Michael N. Hall<\/strong><\/a> (Biozentrum, University of Basel) has been honored with the <strong>2017 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award<\/strong> for \u201cdiscoveries concerning the nutrient-activated TOR proteins and their central role in the metabolic control of cell growth.\u201d Hall\u2019s research led him to identify a key element in cell growth that is responsible for the development of diseases such as cancer and diabetes. &#8220;I am extraordinarily pleased and deeply grateful that the Lasker Foundation has honored our fundamental research with this award,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2017-09\/uob-laf090617.php\">said Michael Hall<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a lot of buzz around the Lasker Awards because, remarkably, about 85 recipients of the Lasker Awards have gone on to becoming Nobel Laureates. The award that is handed out annually comes with a $250,000 prize.
