It is bestowed annually <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/awards\/copley-medal\/\">\u201cfor outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science\u201d<\/a>; the award alternates between the physical and biological sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The latest recipient of the Copley Medal is <strong>Professor Peter Higgs<\/strong>. He was honored for his pioneering work on the theory of Higgs boson. The Royal Society\u2019s website elaborates that the Prof. Higgs is deserving of this award due to \u201chis fundamental contribution to particle physics with his theory explaining the origin of mass in elementary particles, confirmed by the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Prof. Higgs, now 86, has joined the ranks of Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking, who were also honored with the Copley Medal for their outstanding contribution to science. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/70581\/20150723\/higgs-boson-theorist-peter-higgs-given-worlds-longest-running-scientific-prize.htm\">&#8220;It is an honour to be the recipient this year of the Copley Medal, the Royal Society&#8217;s premier award,&#8221;<\/a> said Prof. Higgs upon receipt of his Copley Medal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The Copley Medal was created following donations from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rsnr.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/11\/1\/54.full.pdf\">Godfrey Copley<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_Godfrey_Copley,_2nd_Baronet\">wealthy English landowner, art-collector, and a public figure<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">who was elected as a member of the Royal Society in 1691<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.
