A recently published report titled <em>China\u2019s International Scientific Research Collaboration Landscape<\/em>, jointly\u00a0produced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.ncste.org\/\">Chinese National Center for Science and Technology Evaluation<\/a>\u00a0(NCSTE) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clarivate.com\/\">Clarivate Analytics<\/a>,\u00a0announced that China <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-06\/19\/c_136378399.htm\">ranks third in the world<\/a> when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/editing-services\/academic-editing-and-proofreading-services.html\">publishing academic papers<\/a> that are a result of international collaboration. The report is based on bibliometrics (publication and citation data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webofknowledge.com\/\">Web of Science<\/a>) and viewpoints of Chinese researchers and research management professionals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reviewing the international collaboration patterns in China from 2006 to 2015, the report notes that the volume of papers produced through international collaboration has increased 4.4 times \u2013 from 16,000 papers in 2006 to 71,000 papers in 2015. China has collaborated with more than 188 countries and regions globally, and the top fields of collaboration are Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Clinical medicine and Materials Science. This reflects the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opengovasia.com\/articles\/7782-china-produced-third-highest-number-of-research-papers-through-international-collaboration-in-2015\">deepening relationship between China and partnering countries<\/a>. Moreover, China is benefitting from these collaborations. Over the last decade, the citation impact of papers involving international collaborations has been higher than the country\u2019s average citation impact. The volume of research output is not the only noteworthy point the report makes. An increasing number of Chinese researchers are playing a leading role in these collaborative projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chinese government has been providing significant support to the country\u2019s research and development (R&amp;D). From an expenditure of 1.42 per cent of the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on research and development in 2006, the country has increased its spending to 2.1 per cent in 2016. Apart from this, recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-05\/14\/c_136282982.htm\">the Belt and Road Initiative<\/a>, which is a large project that intends to develop the infrastructure of the country to boost its economic growth and is a step towards taking on a larger role in global affairs. China also climbed three spots in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalinnovationindex.org\/analysis-indicator\">2017 Global Innovation Index<\/a> compared to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/pressroom\/en\/articles\/2016\/article_0008.html\">last year<\/a>, and is now ranked 22<sup>nd<\/sup> among the world\u2019s most innovative nations.
