Zhang et al. have published their predictions and experiments on compressing sodium chloride (under 200,000 atm) to form new compounds. The authors report compounds that violate textbook rules\u2014NaCl<sub>3<\/sub>, NaCl<sub>7<\/sub>, Na<sub>3<\/sub>Cl<sub>2<\/sub>, Na<sub>2<\/sub>Cl, and Na<sub>3<\/sub>Cl. These compounds validate co-author A. Oganov\u2019s methodology for predicting the properties of objects\u2014a methodology now used worldwide for computational material discovery\u2014and hold the promise of novel materials and applications.
