With the theme focusing on how AI is reshaping peer review, we decided to ask top industry experts on their view of what role AI is likely to play in the future of peer review. Watch the video to know what <strong>Maria Machado (Editor in Chief, Science Diffusion<\/strong>) has to say about how AI can support peer review.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Where do you see the greatest\u202fpotential for AI to support peer reviewers today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><strong>A:<\/strong> <\/span>\u00a0Okay. Hi. So, where do you see the greatest potential for AI to support peer reviewers today? I think AI has great potential mainly for helping reviewers to go through the literature that\u2019s already there and pick\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">out the ways in which the research <\/span>they\u2019re<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>reviewing fits\u2014or doesn\u2019t fit\u2014within the current thinking in the subject.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0A<\/span>nd also to see if it\u2019s novel, if there are\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">any important research gaps that are\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">missing. What AI I <\/span>don\u2019t think is still able\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">to do is to capture the nuance of some of the<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>context that\u2019s there. So, you can\u2019t just\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">get AI to do a literature review for you<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>and expect it to match the intro of an article that you\u2019re reviewing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>Have you seen any real-world examples where AI tools helped\u2014or hurt\u2014the peer review process?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>Well, I have seen some examples of\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">where AI tools that have been created for very clear<\/span> purposes. There are a couple of AI\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">tools that have been created for to help both<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>reviewers and authors to go through EQUATOR network\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">reporting guideline checklists. And those are<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>helpful because it will let both authors\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">and reviewers know if <\/span>there\u2019s any flagrant<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>gap that\u2019s missing. If the authors need to fill\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">out any more or detail, <\/span>any more information<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>that they have missed in their papers. It is quite important because a lot of the<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>time I see that the same types of information are missing that people do not abide by<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>the same items in reporting\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">checklists. And <\/span>that\u2019s basically because you<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>as an author you will write a paper like you\u2019re\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">used to <\/span>writing a paper and as a reviewer you\u2019re<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>reviewing a paper like you\u2019re used to reviewing\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">your paper. <\/span>It\u2019s good to jolt our<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>biases and prejudices and make sure that we are complying to what we say we are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>Should peer reviewers be trained to work alongside AI tools? What kind of literacy do they need?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>Yes, I think everyone should be trained to\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">work alongside AI tools in whatever it is that<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re doing. Either reviewers, researchers,\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">academic publishing professionals, or whatever<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>kinds of professionals<strong>\u2014<\/strong>you should be trained to work alongside AI tools that are relevant to you.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>You don\u2019t need to be an expert in everything, but it\u2019s good that you find something that works to<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>alleviate your own burden and that you can trust.\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">It\u2019s<\/span> very important that you know and that you\u2019re<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>trained to spot the tools that are correct for\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">you, that work for what for your purposes, and try<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>a couple of different ones. And if it doesn\u2019t\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">work, if you see that there are gaps or errors, try something different.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">There are a lot of tools being developed<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>right now and they are just that, they are being\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">developed. They are still works in progress. So,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s good that a couple are being tried on and\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">that you provide feedback to the developers. A<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>lot of the time those developers are still asking for feedback on tools and what<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>they can do differently. So that is a great\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">opportunity for reviewers and authors to get<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>involved in development of the tools that they\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">will need for the purposes that they use them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <strong>Do you think disclosing the use of AI in peer review will become standard practice in the future? Why or why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>I think that it\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">will become standard practice as much as it is<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>standard practice to disclose the version or the\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">software that you use for statistical analysis. It<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>is normal to use it, but you still have to state\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">which ones you used and how you use them. <\/span>AI is not just a concept. Generative AI tools are being developed.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>They are tools. They can help you. They\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">cannot do the work for you. <\/span>So I think<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>it will be great that we disclose tools. I\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">think that <\/span>it\u2019ll be great that the tools have<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>different versions that you can\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">point to. <\/span>And I think that yes,<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>that\u2019s exactly the place where we\u2019re\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Want to know if your paper is ready for peer review?
