There\u2019s\u00a0a lot of talk about artificial intelligence (AI) and the use of AI tools in research.\u00a0While many advocate for integrating AI into the research workflow, several scholars continue to remain skeptic. In this video,\u00a0we break it down and clarify what ethical AI\u00a0use\u00a0is all about!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Raffaella Gozzelino (Asst. Professor, NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal) answers questions asked by researchers like you on one of our live webinar trainings. Here are the excerpts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0I\u00a0wrote\u00a0my research lately,\u00a0submitted\u00a0and\u00a0waiting\u00a0for approval. I used AI, but in\u00a0a very limited\u00a0way. To what limit\u00a0we can\u00a0use it\u00a0in terms of writing out our data? In the discussion section, for example, can we rely on AI for data analysis?<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0You can rely on AI, but you\u00a0always\u00a0need to check for accuracy. My suggestion\u00a0is to\u00a0write the manuscript entirely, and then use AI to improve your writing, to check whether the data\u00a0has\u00a0been analyzed in a proper way, or if you missed something.\u00a0Similarly,\u00a0you can use AI to expand your discussion in a way that might be more\u00a0logical\u00a0in terms\u00a0of\u00a0the data\u00a0analysis\u00a0so that\u00a0a reader easily understands the interpretation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0Kindly suggest the AI tools for some of these improvements you have mentioned.<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0The AI tools that I mostly suggest are those that I presented:\u00a0<\/span>Paperpal<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>R Discovery<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Mind the Graph<\/span><\/b><\/a>. Because with those tools, you have all what you need to review the literature, to create a comparative analysis,\u00a0and\u00a0to provide the illustrations that you might want to insert as a scheme or as a graphical abstract in your presentation of an article or of a poster.\u00a0I recommend\u00a0these\u00a0tools\u00a0especially for\u00a0new\u00a0researchers.<\/span>
\nAnother reason I suggest the tools and services offered by Editage is that\u00a0uploading\u00a0information into a platform that is not properly licensed or\u00a0that\u00a0is not\u00a0properly designed\u00a0to protect your data\u00a0can be risky. You want to keep owning your project.\u00a0So\u00a0use authentic platforms and websites\u00a0only.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0How much similarity is acceptable by the journals?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0This\u00a0depends\u00a0on\u00a0the journals, but is very\u00a0low,\u00a0it\u00a0is below 20%\u00a0or\u00a0even lower. There are journals that accept 10%\u00a0and\u00a0those are more\u00a0restricted\u00a0to the material and method section.\u00a0This is because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very unlikely that\u00a0you\u00a0provide\u00a0an introduction or a discussion that is the same as\u00a0presented\u00a0somewhere else. But do\u00a0be careful because similarity is one of the first things that the journal checks when you\u00a0submit\u00a0a manuscript. The manuscript goes through the different AI platforms to look for plagiarism.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in addition to\u00a0similarity,\u00a0check\u00a0whether you\u00a0comply with\u00a0the\u00a0journal\u2019s\u00a0guidelines in terms of providing ethical approval or\u00a0disclosing\u00a0the important\u00a0information.\u00a0You also need to avoid\u00a0figure manipulation. If by any chance you have\u00a0these\u00a0issues\u00a0or\u00a0you incurred in these kinds\u00a0of practices, then the paper does not go to the editor. It comes back to you to fix\u00a0the\u00a0things before reaching the editor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0Kindly suggest AI tools that are free to use.<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0Well, you can easily\u00a0find those\u00a0on a Google search. But again,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0recommending\u00a0you not\u00a0to upload\u00a0sensitive information\u00a0on free platforms\u00a0because licensed platforms are developed to preserve the safety of the data. So, try to use\u00a0tried and tested platforms, something like\u00a0ChatGPT. But remember, your information is out. You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want that. What you want are reliable AI tools\u00a0that protect\u00a0your data.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0Do we need to\u00a0disclose\u00a0the use of Paperpal in the acknowledgement while\u00a0submitting\u00a0the manuscript?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nA:\u00a0Yes.\u00a0Check the guidelines for the specific section of using AI tools.\u00a0Some\u00a0people\u00a0think\u00a0that\u00a0if others find out that AI tools were used it implies that the\u00a0author\u00a0does not\u00a0know\u00a0how to write.\u00a0But that\u00a0is not the case. Everything can be used, but everything\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0acknowledged.\u00a0You can acknowledge it in the material and method section\u00a0if the journal suggests. Or in the acknowledgement\u00a0by\u00a0stating\u00a0saying simply that you made use of this application for\u00a0reviewing of\u00a0the paper. This\u00a0will\u00a0not prevent your paper from being published. You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0create\u00a0a bad impression to the editor\u00a0or to the reviewers.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0like declaring a conflict of interest.\u00a0If people have\u00a0a\u00a0conflict of interest and declare it,\u00a0it\u00a0does not\u00a0stop the paper from being\u00a0published.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0simply acknowledging, and you can have your paper published.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Can\u00a0we review literature and create references\u00a0with the help of the AI tools?<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0Yes, you can. If you have all the papers that you read, collected,\u00a0and uploaded\u00a0in\u00a0that platform, then it would be easy for you to\u00a0create a reference list. It allows\u00a0you to\u00a0easily manage the\u00a0numerous\u00a0papers that you checked\u00a0or compared\u00a0on\u00a0the platform.\u00a0But you need to\u00a0acknowledge that you used\u00a0the tool to create\u00a0references\u00a0as well. If you feel more comfortable, you might want to\u00a0disclose\u00a0what you used the AI tool for.\u00a0For instance,\u00a0in terms of\u00a0reviewing the paper, interpreting the results, or creating a reference list.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0using\u00a0Quillbot, Grammarly,\u00a0and Turnitin. Do I still need the Paperpal as you mentioned\u00a0that it\u00a0is better than Grammarly?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A:\u00a0It depends\u00a0on your requirements.\u00a0In this presentation,\u00a0I wanted to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0the differences\u00a0between\u00a0applications so\u00a0you can compare\u00a0the features\u00a0as per your needs.\u00a0At times, you\u00a0might need\u00a0a quite simple\u00a0tool to execute a simple task,\u00a0and you\u00a0can continue using\u00a0your tools. But\u00a0if at\u00a0some point you would like to\u00a0consider\u00a0different\u00a0features\u00a0of various\u00a0tools, you may explore the ones\u00a0I presented. For instance, if you need to expand your research and check for more articles\u00a0by going beyond your limited pool in the current tool that you are using, you can compare it with\u00a0other tools until you come across the one that is satisfactory.\u00a0Or\u00a0is\u00a0you feel that the way of writing is not\u00a0entirely correct, you may choose to switch to\u00a0tool\u00a0that is\u00a0more\u00a0appropriate for\u00a0scholarly writing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0Does the use of AI\u00a0for\u00a0improving\u00a0sentence structure of the manuscript decrease the weightage or credibility of the paper?<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0Not at all!\u00a0This is the best use of AI because you can allow the tool to teach you how to write.\u00a0If AI\u00a0provides\u00a0a more\u00a0elaborated\u00a0sentence that\u00a0presents the message in a\u00a0better\u00a0manner,\u00a0it does not diminish either the credibility or the impact or the chance to have the paper accepted.\u00a0It is the content of your manuscript what makes an editor and the reviewer to accept it or not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0Which tool is the best out of all?<\/span><\/b>
\nA:\u00a0Every\u00a0tool has specific features that\u00a0makes\u00a0it unique. So,\u00a0it is difficult to find the tool that\u00a0is the best for all your requirements\u00a0because tools are specialized\u00a0for\u00a0different\u00a0purposes depending on\u00a0the\u00a0user\u00a0demand.\u00a0For instance,\u00a0there are specific tools that can help you prepare\u00a0graphs\u00a0or\u00a0infographics\u00a0or\u00a0graphical\u00a0abstract. But\u00a0to check for grammatical errors\u00a0in\u00a0your manuscript, there are different tools.
