If you use an illustration for personal use , for example in a conference presentation, you own the copyright to the illustration. If others use the illustration, they must give credit.
However, if you use an illustration in a paper to be submitted to a journal , the copyright usually transfers to the publisher once the paper is accepted for publication. In rare cases, the copyright may remain with you even after the paper is published in the journal, but we recommend checking the guidelines of the journal or publisher.
