Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that is investing heavily in AI research and development. The Saudi government has established several initiatives to support AI research, including the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) and the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA)

In a recent development, Saudi Arabia became one of 28 countries to sign the “Bletchley Declaration,” alongside countries including the US, UK, EU and China to ensure safe usage of AI.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has developed a dedicated research center for AI. Some of the research activities of interest for the KAUST AI Initiative include foundations of AI and ML, AI applications, AI in bioinformatics and life science, Natural Language Processing (Arabic), Robotics and Visual Computing.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the research landscape. By automating tasks, providing insights, and connecting people, AI is helping researchers to be more efficient, effective, and innovative. AI is transforming the way we consume, conduct, and promote research.

AI in consuming research:

AI-powered search engines can scan vast databases of scholarly literature and return relevant results to researchers rapidly. AI can also be used to create personalized recommendations and generate summaries of articles, greatly increasing the efficiency of research.

AI in conducting research:

AI can be used to automate tasks such as data collection, data analysis, and hypothesis testing. AI can also be used to develop new research methods and to generate new insights into complex problems.

Saudi researchers are using AI to address a wide range of challenges, including healthcare, education, environment, energy, and economy. For example, Saudi Ministry of Health is using AI to improve the efficiency of its hospital operations and to develop personalized treatment plans for patients.

The University of Oxford and King Abdulaziz University (KAU) have partnered to create a new Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Precision Medicine. The new international collaboration will bring together experts in medicine, drug discovery and artificial intelligence with the aim of finding new treatments for common diseases as well as rare genetic conditions.

The Saudi government is also using AI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its own operations. For example, the Saudi Ministry of Finance is using AI to automate tax collection and to detect fraud.

AI in promoting research:

AI is also helping researchers in creating engaging and informative research materials, such as summaries, visualizations, and videos. AI can also be used to target research to specific audiences and to measure the impact of research.

One of the major advancements that AI will bring into the promotion of research will be its use to translate research findings into multiple languages. This application can help to make research more accessible to a global audience.

Communicating research findings through social media and other online platforms can be aided by AI via identifying target audiences. AI can also be used to recommend research papers to researchers based on their history of reading past papers. Creating personalized summaries of research findings for policymakers, practitioners, and members of the public is also simplified by using AI tools.

There is a new focus on developing a strong legal framework for AI integration, including privacy and data protection as well as intellectual property rights. Additionally, it is important to develop ethical guidelines and regulations for the use of AI in research to ensure that it is used for good and not for harm.

Vision 2030: embracing the transformative power of AI

Vision 2030 is enabling an ambitious nation that will serve as the foundation for a vibrant society and a thriving economy. The Saudi government is committed to the improvement and digitization of public services to better serve the needs of its people and businesses. The country has a young and educated population, a strong commitment to innovation, and significant financial resources. With its continued investment in AI research and development, Saudi Arabia is poised to become a global leader in AI.

Join us for the most prestigious gathering of the year – the Vision 2030 Research Excellence Event! This event is a unique opportunity to be part of a discussion that shapes the future of research in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. We are bringing together senior researchers from leading institutes and hospitals across Saudi Arabia to share insights, foster collaboration, and explore the evolving research landscape.
