CACTUS exhibits at the 35th Annual Meeting of the Society for Scholarly Publishing

Editage/Cactus Communications participated in the 35th Annual Meeting of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) in San Francisco, California, from June 5 to 7. CACTUS had a strong presence at the meeting this year not only as an exhibitor but also as the sponsor of the meeting lanyards. Representing CACTUS were Donald Samulack (President, US Operations), Sandi McIntyre (Account Director), Nikesh Gosalia (Vice President, Author Services), Aneesha Jaisheel (Associate Vice President, Systems & Information Management), Tanya Mendes (Senior Managing Editor), and Marisha Fonseca (Managing Editor). Marisha was one of two recipients of an international travel grant awarded by the SSP to promising young professionals in the field of academic publishing.

The theme of the meeting was “Surviving (and Thriving!) in Our Multi-Access World: Navigating the New Publishing Paradigm.” The sessions focused on new developments that are affecting the academic community, such as Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), and how technology is changing the face of the publishing industry. The speakers also provided interesting insights on how increasing submissions from East Asia are affecting the rest of the world. There has been a sharp increase in the number of submissions from China to Gold Open Access journals in Brazil, for example.

With a record attendance of around 850, the meeting provided us with the opportunity to meet key members of international journals, publishers, and societies, as well as some of the vendors who provide various services to the industry.
