Dr. Daniel Gillis is an Associate Professor and Statistician in the School of Computer Science, and former Director of the Physical Science and Engineering Education Research Centre in the College of Engineering and Physical Science at the University of Guelph (UG). He is also a member of the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses, and he sits on the scientific advisory panels for eNuk, and RightMesh. Daniel is the co-founder of Farm To Fork, a project which uses computer science to reduce hunger in Guelph. He is also co-creator of ICON, a transdisciplinary undergraduate classroom that brings students from across campus together to work on social challenges. He is co-founder of GuelphHacks and the Improve Life Challenge, a series of multidisciplinary annual hackathons held at the University of Guelph, and he is co-creator of the Gryphons Care initiative. He spends most of his time working on interdisciplinary teams which have focused on public health assessment, and natural resource management, software design, and pedagogy. This has included collaborative projects with the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Saugeen Ojibway First Nations, McGill University, Laurentian University, and numerous departments within the UG including Economics, Political Sciences, Geography, Mathematics & Statistics, Integrative Biology, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Population Medicine, Environmental Sciences, and Engineering. Most recently he has been working with the Inuit of Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, Labrador to develop mobile applications for environment and health monitoring, and to develop tools to address a lack of internet and cellular infrastructure. He was recently awarded a $2.13 million grant from Mitacs to evaluate the ability of wireless mobile mesh technologies to overcome the digital divide caused by lacking internet access or cellular signal. The five year grant will provide funding for 4 Post Doctoral Fellows, 16 PhDs, and 10 Research Assistants.
