Q: Can you suggest how I can structure my research statement?

Detailed Question -

Hello, I'm looking for help/suggestions towards the structuring of my research statement. My research project is evaluating the challenges/barriers faced by adapted-sport coaches. Some ideas I have are:

- Further understand the challenges that coaches face when training athletes with various disabilities from physical to mental.

- Aim to address these challenges and hopefully come up with a solution to help assist coaches provide better coaching to disabled athletes and prevent or minimise the number of barriers that may occur.

- Investigate and question the support that these coaches receive; is it adequate and sufficient?

- How can these barriers be avoidable or reduced?

- What support is available for adaptive sport coaches to access? - How can adaptive sports coaching be improved?

Answer:

A research statement is usually a part of an academic job application. It is a brief document that summarizes the applicant's past research experience, mentions the state of the project the applicant is currently working on and maps out his/her future trajectory of research. Your research statement is very important as this is the premise on which the selection committee decides whther the candidate is a good fit for the academic position.

You have mentioned that your project examines the challenges faced by adapted sport coaches. You can explain why and how you came up with your research questions, how you have examined/plan to examine them and what tangible solutions you have arrived at or hope to arrive at. Make sure you tie these with the broad field of study and show how your solutions can impact the field of sport coaching. Your research statement should show that you are self-motivated and passionate about your project.
