Bio
I’m a Lecturer in Researcher Development at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and joined their UWS Academy in November 2018. I have been engaged with researcher development since 2016 when I started the Postdoc Forum at Heriot-Watt University. In my new role at UWS I’m supporting researchers in their development by providing training, opportunities to develop new skills, and research how to best support early career researchers. My background is in geoscience and I have a PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering. After my PhD I worked as a researcher for the British Geological Survey before deciding to go back into academia for a postdoc and worked at Heriot-Watt University from January 2015 to November 2018. I was diagnosed with MS in 2016 and have since been engaged with Chronically Academic and MS Society Scotland to share my experience, raise awareness and share tips and tricks with others. I'm very open about my life with MS and use Twitter to raise awareness and share my experiences (@GeomechSteph). In my spare time, I enjoy running - I started again 6 months after my MS diagnosis and it has helped me a lot as part of my MS management and treatment.
