For researchers, mathematics is far more than a subject learned in school. It is a universal language that underpins discoveries across disciplines.  Mathematical thinking helps scientists identify patterns, model complex systems, and solve problems that might otherwise seem impossible.

Cinema has long been fascinated by the minds that work with numbers. Many films explore the brilliance, creativity, and perseverance required to push the boundaries of knowledge. Whether through the quiet persistence of researchers, the passion of inspiring teachers, or unconventional thinkers who challenge established ideas, these stories have one thing in common: the fascinating combination of logic and creativity that makes mathematics special.

This Pi Day, here are twelve films that celebrate mathematical curiosity, innovative thinking, and the human stories behind discovery. I acknowledge my readers for sharing their recommendations, of which I have tried to include as many as possible.

1. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Set partly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this film follows Will Hunting, a janitor with extraordinary mathematical ability. When he begins secretly solving complex problems left on a chalkboard by a professor, his hidden genius comes to light. The story highlights the importance of mentorship, self-belief, and recognizing potential in unexpected places.

2. Stand and Deliver (1988)

Based on the true story of teacher Jaime Escalante, this film shows how passion for teaching can transform students’ futures. Escalante challenges a class of underprivileged students to master advanced calculus, proving that belief and determination can overcome barriers in education.

3. The Imitation Game (2014)

This historical drama follows mathematician Alan Turing and his groundbreaking work during World War II to break the German Enigma code. Turing’s work not only helped shorten the war but also laid the foundations for modern computing.

4. Hidden Figures (2016)

This inspiring film tells the story of behind-the-scenes mathematicians including Katherine Johnson at NASA during the early years of the space race. Their calculations were critical to launching astronauts into orbit and advancing the United States’ space program.

5. Apollo 13 (1995)

When an explosion cripples the Apollo 13 spacecraft, scientists and engineers must rely on rapid calculations and creative problem-solving to bring the astronauts home safely. The film captures the real-time power of mathematics and engineering under pressure.

6. Gifted (2017)

This emotional drama focuses on a young mathematics prodigy whose guardian struggles to balance nurturing her extraordinary ability with giving her a normal childhood. The story raises important questions about talent, expectations, and the human side of genius.

7. Nil Battey Sannata (2015)

In this inspirational movie, an Indian domestic worker enrolls in school alongside her daughter to help her overcome a fear of mathematics. The movie came to mind as it highlights how the fear of mathematics can be overcome by anyone, at any age.

8. Super 30 (2019)

Inspired by the work of mathematician and educator Anand Kumar, the film follows a coaching program that trains talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology. It highlights how access to education can transform lives. Along similar lines of coaching underprivileged students, but not about mathematics, is the movie “12th Fail” which remains one of my all-time favorites and is incredibly inspirational.

9. Moneyball (2011)

Although focused on baseball, this film shows how statistical analysis can revolutionize decision-making. Oakland Athletics manager Billy Beane uses data-driven strategies to build a competitive team despite limited financial resources. Many have recommended the movie “21” as well for this list, which I will give honorable mention here, as it is also a brilliant movie in which mathematics plays a central role.

10. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

This Academy Award–winning film portrays the life of mathematician John Nash, whose pioneering work in game theory transformed economics and social sciences. The film explores both intellectual brilliance and the personal challenges Nash faced.

11. The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)

This film tells the story of Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan and his collaboration with G. H. Hardy at University of Cambridge. Ramanujan’s extraordinary intuition in number theory reshaped modern mathematics despite his lack of formal training.

12. Shakuntala Devi (2020)

A biographical film about Indian mathematician Shakuntala Devi, famously known as the “human computer.” The movie explores both her remarkable mental calculation abilities and the personal journey behind her global fame.
