Q: Can I send a message to the editor to inquire about the status one month after the peer review process began?

Hi Danat – Welcome back to the forum! We wonder if this question is a follow-up to your previous question. If so, it’s good to know that your manuscript was considered for a peer review, that too, by an Elsevier journal.

Staying with your previous query for a bit, as that was about three-and-a-half months back, it seems the initial editorial process (which is what your query was about) did take close to three months after all. So, your manuscript has been progressing along the timeline the editor stated. :-)

If so, that might be the case regarding the peer review and your present query too. You haven’t mentioned whether the editor told you how long the peer review would take, but one month would be standard time for the reviews. Unless there is a reason for you to find out the outcome sooner (such as an academic dependency), you could wait for some time, especially because at all stages, the manuscript has been progressing as mentioned. So, you could wait about two weeks or so, and if there’s no update by then, you could drop the editor a mail asking about the status.
