Q: Does it mean that my revised manuscript has been assigned to a completely new reviewer and will go the review process again from the start if the status changes from "required reviews completed" to under review again?

Detailed Question -

Hi, We have submitted our manuscript to an Elsevier journal and it came back with major revision. After major revision we have submitted the manuscript back and it went to with editor to under review after one day and to required reviews completed after 2 weeks and then again to under review after 1 day. What does that mean? Does it mean the manuscript has been assigned to a new reviewer and will be assessed by him as a new submission and can take longer than expected ?

Answer:

Dear Author,

Thank you for writing to us.

The subsequent change back to "under review" after one day could indicate one of several possibilities:

1. The editor has sent your manuscript to additional reviewers for further evaluation or to address specific concerns raised in the initial reviews.

2. The editor may have received conflicting reviews and wants to seek additional opinions to make an informed decision.

3. The editor may have conducted an initial evaluation of the revised manuscript and decided to send it back for further review.

In any case, it is difficult to determine the exact reason without more information from the journal. However, the fact that your manuscript is undergoing further review does not necessarily mean it will take longer than expected. The duration of the review process can vary depending on the journal, the availability of reviewers, and other factors.

To get a more accurate understanding of the status and potential timeline for your manuscript, it would be best to reach out to the journal's editorial office directly. They can provide you with specific information about the review process and the current status of your manuscript.
