Q: How long does the status "Ready for decision" take?

Detailed Question -

The status changes for my submitted manuscript were as follows:

Submitted: September 02; With Journal: September 02;  With Editor: September 04; Reviewer invited: September 04; Under review: September 04;  Ready for decision: September 20.

The last status (Ready for decision) has been constant since September 20. In your opinion, how long does it take to get a response from the editor? Is it necessary to send an email to the editor regarding this status? I need the accepted manuscript for my thesis defense ASAP.

Answer:

The journal has processed your paper really fast. Generally speaking, since the journal has been so proactive in processing your paper, I would have recommended waiting for the decision. But considering the circumstances, I think you can send an email to the journal, thanking them for the quick review process and explaining why you need the decision at the earliest. This will make them aware of the urgency of the situation and hopefully, they will expedite the decision.

Answer:

Recently I had a paper in an Elsevier journal and after 3 days of under review its status changed to "Ready for decision". We are waiting and after about one month it was accepted. Do not worry about this period of time, which depends on the number of submitted papers in the journal.
