Video: Understanding the Peer Review Process in Different Journals
Want to understand how the peer review process works across different journals? In this video, Dr. Oliver Gruenvogel breaks down the complete journal peer review process. Understand the step-by-step process from manuscript submission and editor screening to reviewer comments, revisions, and final publication decisions.
What happens after you submit your manuscript? It almost seems like a mystery to new authors. The BTS of a journal’s peer review is not very clear to those submitting to their preferred journals. Why do some papers get desk rejected while others move forward for review? What do editors evaluate exactly?
To begin with, even before your manuscript is sent for peer review, the journal editor performs desk checks: journal scope match, audience fit, compliance with formatting guidelines, and manuscript quality. If these criteria are not fully satisfied, desk rejections could occur. Once the manuscript proceeds for further evaluation, reviewers assess novelty, experimental design, controls, and scientific relevance before determining whether your research is ready for publication.
The video also explores the differences between minor revision, major revision, rejection, and “reject with possibility to resubmit” decisions. You will also get some oth questions answered:
- Why do high-impact journals like Nature often have stricter review systems and more reviewers?
- How long does peer review usually take?
- What should authors expect during multiple rounds of revision?
Peer review continues to be the foundation of scientific publishing. But there are predatory journals that often bypass or fake this process. Understanding these differences can help you choose reputable journals and prepare stronger submissions.
