Video: Using AI? Watch Out for Violations of Submission Ethics
What ethical considerations should authors keep in mind when using AI for research paper submissions? That’s a big topic that has been the basis for discussions ever since the advent of large language models (LLMs) that made writing so much easier.
AI tools are often integrated into the research workflow in some way or another, and there is nothing bad about that. Dr. Oliver Gruenvogel opines: “The important thing is that we clearly show when we do that, and that we stay in control as researchers. For submissions, practically all journals have implemented some sort of policy on disclosure of use of AI. Typically, it’s shown in the guidelines to authors or elsewhere on the website, but look for that and follow that exactly. Most journals state that you’re allowed to use it, but you need to very clearly describe where and how you used it.“
The key thing to remember is: You are the author and your name is on the paper, making you responsible (not ChatGPT!) for every single word that is written in that paper. You cannot delegate that to an AI tool. Implement this line of thinking and use AI to simplify your work o enhance your writing. AI can be extremely helpful to overcome that writer’s block.
