Leading your research team in data analysis: 7 tips for investigators

Statistical analysis is an integral part of biomedical research, right from designing the study to choosing appropriate methods and running inferential tests. But what if you, the principal investigator on a research project, don’t have expertise in biostatistics? No worries! You can still lead your research team through these crucial tasks successfully. Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Define Clear Objectives

Before diving into data analysis, define your research objectives and questions. This will help guide the analysis and keep your team focused on the goals.

2. Monitor Data Quality

Garbage in, garbage out. Ensure that data collection is meticulous. Work closely with your team to set up proper data collection protocols and validate data quality.

3. Get Basic Training

Invest in basic statistics and data analysis training for your team. Online courses or workshops can provide essential skills without the need for a Ph.D. in biostatistics.

4. Seek Consultation

Don’t hesitate to consult with biostatisticians or statistical experts for complex analyses. They can provide guidance and ensure the validity of your results.

5. Understand the Basics

While you don’t need to understand the intricacies of Bayesian statistics, it’s important to grasp the fundamentals of statistical concepts like p-values, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. This will help you communicate effectively with your team.

6. Emphasize Documentation

Encourage your team to document every step of the analysis process. This promotes transparency and reproducibility, essential in biomedical research.

7. Interpret Results Carefully

Lastly, be cautious when interpreting results. Avoid making sweeping claims. Involve your team, especially the biostatisticians you consult, in drawing inferences from your data and discussing them in your research paper.
