Q: What does a change from With Editor to Submitted mean for an Elsevier journal?

Detailed Question -

I submitted a manuscript to one of Elsevier’s neuroscience journals. The status of the manuscript suddenly changed from With Editor to Submitted to the Journal! Can anyone explain to me what this means?

Answer:

This is not very common, but it does happen. What it usually means is that one Associate Editor (AE) was identified for the manuscript and/or picked it up. However, on going through it, they probably felt some other AE would be a better fit. So, they changed the status back to Submitted. It will now probably go to With Editor again, this time under a different AE. You should wait for some time to see if this happens, or whether the status changes to something else. In case there is further back and forth on your manuscript, you could write to them requesting clarification.

Hope that helps. All the best for the next stages on your manuscript!
