Video: AI Use in Research: What’s Allowed and What’s Not
Many researchers are uncertain when it comes to using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their research workflow. How much AI use is too much AI use? Is there any threshold for it?
In this video, Dr. Monika Sobocan answers two important questions:
1. If I use an AI tool to correct typos and correct grammar, won’t the manuscript be flagged as AI written?
2. Is there any permissible range of AI use in paraphrasing, similar to an acceptable plagiarism percentage?
The answers are not really straightforward. Most of the time, it’s the journal that decides how the use of AI tools must be disclosed. So, always pay attention to the submission guidelines, especially AI usage guidelines, on the journal’s website.
A pro tip: Do not try to hide AI use! That could cause more harm instead of benefitting you.
As far as “permissible range of AI use” goes, the research community has not yet figured out a specific threshold. Remember: anything to do with AI is constantly evolving. Therefore, expecting a fixed rule or a numerical constraint for its use would be unwise. However, journals are allowed to have subjective opinions on AI usage, and authors must adhere to their rules to avoid being punished.
