Q: How long should I wait for a decision after the third round of major revision if the status is still ''with Editor''?

Detailed Question -

I sent a manuscript to a high reputation Elsevier journal. The first peer review process was completed after one month and a major revision was the decision. After I sent the revised manuscript, the status was ‘’with editor’’ and did not change for two weeks. A second major revision was decided. I fulfilled the revisions and sent the manuscript on 10.8.2021. The status changed to ''with editor'' after two days and the status is still ''with editor'' after two months. Is this completely normal? Should I write to the editor or still wait?

Answer:

Waiting on a journal decision is one of the most stressful parts of a researcher's journey, but please do not be worried – response turn-around times can vary greatly based on a number of factors. If we understand correctly, you sent your latest revision on the 10th of August, and it has been "with Editor" since. As it has only been 1 week since your last revised submission, we would recommend waiting longer before reaching out to the journal. The editor will need to first cross-check the major revisions you've made and then likely pass the manuscript on to the peer reviewers for their comments – this can take some time. We would recommend allowing 3 weeks to pass from your last submission, and if you do not receive an update, you can reach out to the journal editor.

We hope you receive a positive decision soon- all the very best!
