Q: Why is the status of my paper showing "Assigned to AE" for so long?

Detailed Question -

Hi, I've submitted my paper to IEEE transaction. The status changed to "Assigned to AE" 2 days after submission. It has been more than a month since then but the status has remained "Assigned to AE." It has not yet changed to "under review" status. Is it because the AE did not accept the recommendation or my paper has problem? Thank you very much!

Answer:

The publication process can be time consuming and it is not uncommon for a paper to remain at the "Assigned to AE" status for more than a month. This does not indicate that there is a problem with your paper. Rather, it probably indicates that the AE has either not yet accepted the invitation or has accepted it, but has not started working on it yet. Editors are busy people and they have a lot of submissions to take care of. Probably, there are quite a few submissions that the AE needs to handle. Your paper could be waiting for its turn to be evaluated by the editor.

You have nothing to worry about, but if the status does not change even by the end of this month, you can write a polite email to the editor asking if he/she has received the submission and by when you can expect to see a status change.
