Crowdfunding---the use of small amounts of capital from a large number of individuals (usually online) to finance a business or artistic enterprise---is an established method of raising capital for entrepreneurs and creative artists. And it’s now becoming a popular way of securing funding for scientific research,[1] especially among early career researchers, who may otherwise be at a disadvantage when it comes to securing grants from funding agencies.
