Q: Is it acceptable for the same author to publish an academic article with the same method that s/he published in a manuscript before?
The author used the same research method to study another substance as one used in her/his published paper, which leads to a high similarity rate. l would like to ask is it an acceptable practice for an academic journal?
Thank you for writing to us. Methodology from a previously published paper can be used, but the source must be clearly cited. Moreover, it is important to ensure that the new work is distinctly different from the previous study, enough to warrant two separate publications without being considered a case of salami slicing. We would recommend that you explain this point and provide a link to the published case report in the cover letter to avoid any ethical concerns later. We suggest you refer to the ICMJE guidelines regarding overlapping publication before proceeding with the submission of a new paper.
We also have a few related resources you may want to go through:
- Is it salami slicing if I publish a new study based on my previous published work?
- Would a follow-up case report be regarded as duplicate submission or salami slicing?
- If the dataset and method for two papers are the same but the result is different, would they be considered a case of salami slicing?
Hope these help. All the best for your study!
