Q: My manuscript's status is changing rapidly and some steps are being skipped

Detailed Question -

I have submitted my paper some time ago. Over the last few days, I noticed that the status is changing quite fast, and it seems that some steps are skipped. What does this imply? If I want to contact journal editor, how should I draft my mail?

Answer:

It would be easier to answer this question if you could give a more detailed account of how fast the status changed or which steps were skipped. Without knowing this, it would be difficult to give a specific answer. There are quite a few possibilities. For instance, if peer review has been skipped and the paper has gone directly to "decision-in process" status, it could mean either an acceptance as is (which is extremely rare) or a rejection without review.

This could also be the result of some error in the journal system. I would suggest you first check the journal website for the usual time frames for each step. If there is a major discrepancy in your case, you should write to the editor explaining this. In your mail, mention the steps missing and the difference from the usual journal time frames, and politely inquire if the current status shown is correct.
