Q: What does a status change from "Editor assigned" to "Under review" and back to "Editor assigned" mean?

Detailed Question -

Recently, I submitted my manuscript after major revisions to a Springer journal. For 3 days, the status of my manuscript remained ‘Editor Assigned’ and then changed to ‘Under Review’. I sent an email to the handling editor. Currently, the status of my manuscript has been ‘Editor Assigned’ and it has been showing the same status for one month. What is meaning of this change?

Answer:

Since your manuscript has been resubmitted after major revisions, it would be scrutinized by the associate editor first, who would assess and review your manuscript for the depth of revisions made. This would ideally be sent to peer review if the editor found that you have addressed all the reviewers’ concerns adequately.

Since it has been a month after the ‘Under Review’ status, it might be that your manuscript was sent to the reviewers and the journal has received comments from them. Now the present status is ‘Editor Assigned.’ This means that an editor is reviewing your manuscript and the reviewers’ comments and may arrive at a decision soon. In any case, please contact the handling editor once again for clarity in this matter.
