Q: It has been more than 2 weeks. There has been no change in status.
I submitted a paper to a journal in management & organization on March 12, and it is still awaiting associate editor assignment at the end of the month. What does this status mean? Waiting for a decision or waiting for the manuscript to be assigned to reviewers?
We understand your anxiety. Manuscript acceptance involves several stages; post the initial review, a manuscript is assigned to an associate editor for checking its content quality and writing. The time taken for review under this process can vary amongst journals as it depends on several factors, such as availability and responsiveness of editors and the extent of revisions recommended. We would suggest that you wait for another week before writing to the journal for an update.
Additionally, for help with writing to the journal, you may find this handbook useful: How To Communicate With The Journal? Peer Review Comments, Cover Letter And More. This handbook is available on R Upskill, our sister brand which provides learning programs for various aspects of a researcher’s work, including writing, submission, publication, and research promotion.
You may also refer to the following resources for added clarity:

- What does the status 'Under Review' mean in the ScholarOne manuscript workflow?
Hope this helps and that you hear from the journal soon!
