Q: What is the meaning of the status “Letter submitted, awaiting deadline”?

Detailed Question -

I submitted a letter to the editor to the NEw England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and the status shows, "Letter Submitted -- Awaiting Deadline." What does this mean and what deadline are they referring to? Thank you.

Answer:

This is an interesting status. Typically, the status would show ‘Submitted, awaiting review’, or ‘Submitted, awaiting editor decision’. Was the Letter submitted for any special issue of the journal? Such issues may have deadlines associated with submissions. You can also send an email to the editor to inquiring about the status of the submission to understand this better.

Answer:

I also submitted a letter to the editor and received the same status from the NEJM. My guess is that the deadline refers to the three weeks in which readers are allowed to submit letters in response to recently published NEJM articles, and that the selection of letters to publish will be made by the editors following the deadline.
